Abstract and symbolism is not technically my cup of tea, but for this beauty, I decide to make an exception.
The artist states in their description: "Ever feel like you're lost at sea?" and I'm inclined to say "yes", because most of us live in a society that is always demanding and constantly proves itself to be so unwilling to give, no matter how much you work and effort you put into your work. Problems will come and problems will go only for other to emerge, and you find yourself lost - like a sailor at sea, looking at the horizon yet unable to find land, unable to find home - or an end to the endless sea of troubles. *Classical has taken this feeling and illustrated it in the very literal form of its meaning.
The waters are also anything but calm, giving signs of a very troubled "lost sailor" - constantly plagued by problems. We also see lifelines (I suppose that is what they are called, right? if not, my apologies) yet they don't seem to be connected to anything - another clear indication that the person has nothing to hang on too, that everything is but a temporary bit of comfort.
The dark, gloomy colors used in this work also seem to add an extra bit of charm to the whole composition and the specific "illustration" kind of feeling of it all made this work seem all the more complete. A more realistic feel would never give a viewer such an strong impact and for that I thank the artist for possessing the skills, the talent and most of all - the imagination for bringing this little treasure to life. Assignment or not, art is at, and will remain enjoyable no matter what.
